After a 33-year career at NBC-12, Gene Cox came out of semiretirement to co-anchor at 8 News in August 2012. A series of seemingly melancholy tweets June 21 signaled his departure: "I am now a member of the hard core unemployed." "The devil is a gentleman and never goes where he is not welcome. - A. Lincoln." And "Never fall in love with a dream that played out years ago."

A couple of days later the tune seemed to grow more hopeful: "I can now grow that pony tail I've always wanted." "Couldn't pass the background check for the monastery, I'll just keep looking." And "It's only been three days but not going to work is growing on me. I can do this!"

We asked him, what's next?

He replied, "I plan to find something that works."
