River City Sing is a new monthly song circle* meeting at Living Water Community Center! Our theme this month is “Songs for the Threshold:”
?At the midpoint of autumn, leaves are at their peak and begin to fall, we sense the deeper shift into cooler weather, and the nights become longer. In many cultures in the Northern Hemisphere, this time is marked by holidays like DĂa de los Muertos, All Saints’, and Samhain (where we get Halloween). It is said that these are liminal days where “the veil is thin”: between seasons, between ancestors and the living, and in our own being as we notice what we need as we move towards the winter.
?So we will gather to sing threshold songs for this time – welcoming the cooler days, noticing the energy of nature around us, and honoring the changes we sense shifting within.
*A song circle isn’t a chorus or choir, but a group of folks singing together. No musical/music-reading experience necessary!
Host Kelley Doyle will share songs by beginning with their lyrics, then teaching the songs with drum or a cappella (without instruments) through call-and-echo, gradually building as we go. We repeat them several times to let the words and sound sink in. They focus on themes of love, kinship with the Earth, and self-compassion — little pocket songs we carry to encourage and comfort ourselves and one another.
