Peter J. Hatch: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden

Peter is a gardener and historian who was responsible for the interpretation, maintenance and restoration of the 2,400-acre landscape at Monticello from 1977-2012. Currently the Director Emeritus of Gardens and Grounds for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Peter is an authority on Jefferson’s innovative horticultural practices, the hundreds of varieties of vegetables that he grew, the cultural significance of his gardens, and Jefferson’s vision for food, diversity, and democracy. He’s the author of four books including A Rich Spot of Earth: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden at Monticello, which received the American Horticulture Society’s Best Book Award in 2012. An honorary member of the Garden Club of Virginia and a member of its Restoration Fellowship Committee, Peter will sign books following his presentation.
