“From Ulster to Appalachia” with Fiddlin’ Mike Ferry

March 28 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$12.00 – $15.00

An evening of traditional music, songs and stories with ‘Fiddlin’ Mike Ferry , exploring the powerful journey of the Ulster settlers whose songs and tunes became the heartbeat of Appalachian music.

“From Ulster to Appalachia” is a lively and insightful musical journey across oceans and generations with master fiddler Mike Ferry. Blending performance with storytelling, Mike traces the path of the Scots-Irish from Ulster to the American colonies, exploring how their independent spirit, deep-rooted work ethic, and rich fiddle and song straditions helped shape early American culture. Through spirited tunes, songs and engaging historical insight, he reveals how this resilient community left an enduring mark on the music of Appalachia, which in turn gave rise to old time, bluegrass and country music.
Drawing from his own heritage (three grandparents from Donegal) Mike brings special passion to the distinctive Donegal style of fiddling, demonstrating its driving rhythms and unique bowing techniques. He also explores the musical bridge between Protestant Scots-Irish settlers and the Catholic Irish who arrived in great numbers during the mid-1800s, showing how their shared traditions intertwined to influence early American music. A seasoned performer who has toured nationwide, Mike’s original compositions have been featured on television programs including Dawson’s Creek and Scrubs. Presented in the warm, welcoming listening room of Richmond Folk Music, this performance promises an evening of vibrant music, history, and community.
Tickets $12.00 in advance, $15.00 at the door. Concert begins at 7:30, doors open at 7:00. Plenty of parking and the venue is accessible to all. Light refreshments (coffee, tea an pastries) will be available.
