Exhibition Openings – Signal Boost: New Voices from VCU’s MFA Program & Pia Bakala: Pageant Mom
Main Projects is excited to shine a light on VCU’s nationally recognized MFA program with two exhibits, “Signal Boost”, a group show featuring sculpture, painting, and photography from the class of 2025 and 2026; and “Pageant Mom”, a solo exhibition with 2024 graduate Pia Bakala. Bakala’s narrative paintings explore the interplay of play, fantasy, and identity through tangible expressions of trans and gender-nonconforming kinship. By embracing digital artificiality—its glitches, spectacle, and sanitized absurdities—Bakala critiques structures of accumulation, value, and desire while envisioning alternative forms of family and selfhood that extend beyond societal convention.
