Decoding ‘Intelligence’: The Real-Life Spy Network Behind the Opera

February 4 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Free

The Library of Virginia and the Virginia Opera present a compelling look at the true Civil War-era events that inspired the opera “Intelligence.” Join historians Trenton Hizer, the Library of Virginia’s senior manuscripts acquisition and digital archivist; Nathan Hall, park ranger for the National Park Service; and author Libby Carty McNamee for a discussion that will uncover the remarkable spy networks, acts of resistance and courageous individuals — such as Elizabeth Van Lew and Mary Jane Bowser — whose real stories shaped this groundbreaking work. This discussion, moderated by Adam Turner, artistic director and chief conductor of the Virginia Opera, will be followed by a live musical performance from the Virginia Opera.

This is a free event, but registration is required. Limited free parking is available underneath the Library at 800 East Broad Street. For more information, contact education@lva.virginia.gov.
