Forty year-old research has concluded that approximately 735 slaves were executed by court order in Virginia between 1663 and 1866 In his latest project, author, teacher, researcher, and death-penalty opponent Dale Brumfield is conducting his own research and has determined that this number is actually closer to 1,166. Come hear about Dale’s research process, how he is documenting his findings, and some stories about enslaved individuals who were legally put to death in Virginia in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
