Zac Hryciak and the Jungle Beat at Gallery5

The advent of video catered to a plethora of eccentric bands with gimmicky costumes, choreographed dancing and looped background visuals, all vying to outshine the others with glitter and glam. What Zac Hryciak and the Jungle Beat, a small pop and bossa nova outfit from Chester, do to rise above the peacock antics is in the construction of the songs. The three-piece produces polished compositions of sharp violin play, guitar and ambitious drums that echo in your ears long after play, achieving humbly what most bands exaggerate to reach: a strong stage presence and heartfelt music. The band plays Gallery5 on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. as part of the gallery's First Friday opening of “A Non-Profit Showcase” with folk rocker Jason Horst plus the Happy Lucky Combo. Free. 644-0005. — Alexander Chang
