Lawrence Wilder wrote in a March 10 letter to Piper that he had “investigated the present location of the documents and information necessary to file reports with your office. … I have no such materials in my possession and the most likely source of them has informed me that it would take as long as a month to retrieve them from archives.”

Piper’s office is giving the campaign 90 days from March 24, making them due June 22. If the information isn’t received by then, Piper says, his office will forward the matter to the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney. (According to state code, the Richmond office handles campaign investigations of statewide candidates.)

“Clearly we want the law to be followed,” Piper says. “So we’re just looking forward to clearing this up and moving forward.”

In February, Mayor Wilder’s policy aide, Paul Goldman, told the Times-Dispatch that there was $3,000 left in the Wilder for Governor Campaign account. That leaves $169,571.04 unaccounted for.

Goldman has taken over the role as treasurer for the former campaign because Wilder’s son, who lives in California, is no longer eligible. State law requires campaign treasurers to be registered voters in Virginia. Wilder’s son notified the state of his resignation in a March 17 letter to Piper. — Jason Roop
