What Do You Mean There Are No Dancing Bears?

The Latin Ballet gives audiences a bouquet as a belated Christmas gift.

Some people view flowers as a bad gift idea as in “Aw, thanks, you got me something that eventually will die.” Try telling that to Jesus. Serving as the south-of-the-border sister to Tchaikovsky's holiday staple, “The Legend of the Poinsettia” interprets the Mexican legend of a young girl, who without a gift to honor the birth of Christ, quickly gathers some green weeds. Upon presenting them before a skeptical audience, the plant's dull leaves miraculously turn a beautiful shade of red. Performed by the Latin Ballet of Virginia, the show includes traditional dances from as far away as Puerto Rico and Spain. At the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen on Friday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 10, at 2:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. $15-$20. — Mike Hilleary
