Virginia Lawmakers Approve Production of Marijuana Derivatives For Treatment of Epilepsy

For the first time, state lawmakers have agreed to legalize production of medicinal marijuana in Virginia.

A bill, SB701 from Sen. Dave Marsden, D-Fairfax County, would allow two non-intoxicating derivatives of the marijuana plant – cannabidiol oil and THC-A oil – to be produced in the state for treatment of intractable epilepsy. Manufacturers would have to obtain a permit from the state Board of Pharmacy.

The measure passed the House of Delegates 96-0 Monday. It cleared the Senate last month, 37-2. The bill would not become effective unless re-enacted by the 2017 General Assembly.

Last year, the Assembly approved a legal defense against prosecution for possession of the oils for treating epilepsy.
