But Jim Dunn, president of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce — who was roasted last year — says he’s only beginning to think of the stories he could produce about Ukrop, a former chairman of the chamber’s board.

Ukrop klutzy? Maybe. And spacey, perhaps.

Dunn recalls the time when he and Ukrop were leaving a dinner event at the Bull & Bear Club. “And Jim looked around and said, ‘My car’s missing,'” says Dunn, who tried to help jog his memory. It didn’t work. “So we got in my car and called the police department and reported the car stolen,” Dunn says. “And I took him home.”

Turns out Ukrop had parked illegally, Dunn says: “It had been towed.”

Whoops.

Apparently Ukrop also tends to borrow something to write with, then walk away with it. When Ukrop visited the chamber’s offices, Dunn says, “We always had to watch our pens when he was in here.”

But what about the juicy stuff? Maybe Ukrop’s wife, Barbara, will break some marital confidentiality. She’s presenting at the roast, along with Greta Harris, senior program director of the Showcase Builders Inc., and Jack Berry, executive director of Richmond Renaissance, who will emcee.

The event is scheduled for Nov. 29, at 6 p.m., at The Jefferson Hotel — less than a block away from ESI’s shelter at 2 E. Main St. Tickets are $100 per person; tables of 10 sell for $1,500. (For tickets, call 358-7747, ext. 104.)

Former William and Mary classmate Jay Lawler, class of 1961 and president of Showcase Builders Inc., plans to spill the beans about the pair’s college days. “Just put in, I’ll expose another side to Jim Ukrop,” he says.
