Some things just aren’t funny. AIDS, for instance. But that doesn’t mean laughter can’t be used to fight the disease. That’s why 20 Richmond comics are joining together later this month for two shows that will benefit two AIDS organizations.
Inspired by HIV-positive comic and Richmond native Steve Moore, local comic Ray Bullock decided to launch the event, which will be held Aug. 24 and 25 at the Firehouse Theatre, 1609 W. Broad St., at 8 p.m. Bullock saw Moore’s HBO special and later opened for him at Fieldens. “He’s done so much to help,” Bullock says of Moore.
Moore has managed to incorporate AIDS into his act, but Bullock says the upcoming shows won’t focus on the disease. “You’re not going to hear a bunch of jokes about AIDS,” he says. “You are going to hear some funny jokes and some music.” Some of the performers include Bullock, Betzi Heckman, Matt Didner, Thandi Woodard, Matt Boyle and Dave Gau. The two shows will be different, Bullock says.
All proceeds will benefit the local Fan Free Clinic and the national Pedro Zamora Foundation. The point of the event, Bullock says, is “to make everybody forget about the pain that this has caused, for a little while.”
