TV Wedding Battle: A Couple of Spiders Throw Down Gauntlet

Schuler and Walker, both 2003 UR graduates, are one of seven couples competing for an all-expenses-paid lavish wedding on NBC’s “Today” show Oct. 6. During the next several weeks they’ll participate in various challenges, hoping to win votes from the viewers, who will also decide details of the wedding.

Best of all, Schuler and Walker want to represent Richmond.

“Today” show staff had initially listed New York City as the couple’s hometown, Walker says: “We kind of asked them very politely if they could change that to Richmond, Virginia.”

Walker says they’ve already been through a lot together, from dealing with comments about their interracial relationship (Schuler is black, Walker is white) to finding ways to spend time together as their careers lead them in separate directions.

Walker proposed to Schuler while she was on tour with “The Producers” in Japan, where he grew up with missionary parents. He surprised her in the Imperial Palace gardens in Tokyo and was surprised himself to see her in a neck brace from a bicycle accident.

“I turned around and Joshua was standing there in his suit with a rose,” Schuler says in the couple’s “Today” interview, “and it was like a mirage. And I was like, ‘Is this a dream? I’ve been on medication.'”

On Wednesday, Aug. 9, the Richmond couple was scheduled to undertake their first challenge, singing “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin.”
