The members of this do-it-yourself punk trio have channeled their often screwed-up experiences as women into furious riot-grrrl rock songs. The Two Funerals write brutally honest, feminist lyrics that are both personal and political, sung and screamed with gusto in the tradition of other Richmond punk mainstays such as Avail. “It’s harder for us to be taken seriously as women in the predominantly male subculture of punk,” guitarist Shannon LeCorre says. “We found feminism at the same time we were having these experiences and it just clicked together. … [Punk rock] is supposed to be stereotypically subversive, but isn’t very progressive sometimes as far as being inclusive of race, class, gender and sexuality.” Although members have split to different cities, the plan is to still play and tour together sporadically in support of a new EP, “Boys Club.” The Two Funerals song featured here, “Hit the Ground,” is one of their most potent and pointed, so parental discretion is advised.
