Founded by Enjoli Moon, the Afrikana Independent Film Festival focuses on short, independent films by black filmmakers. On Thursday, Feb. 19, at Croaker’s Spot, the festival will screen “Tobacco Burn,” a 17-minute film written by New York-based writer and filmmaker Ajani Jackson. It’s part of the festival’s Noir Cinema Series every fourth Thursday across the city. Based on true events, the movie is set 35 years before the Civil War with two slaves contemplating the killing of their owner and master. The unflinching portrait, directed by Jackson and Justin Liberman — who spent three years working under Michael Mann and David Mamet on the HBO television series “Boardwalk Empire” — will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Jackson. The screening begins at 7 p.m. A donation of $5 is suggested for admission. afrikanafilmfestival.org.
