A weekly ranking of the city zeitgeist

+5 Spring arrives.

+1 It isn’t close. The University of Richmond Spiders fall to Syracuse in the NIT quarterfinals, 62-46. But there is local excitement anyway. The Robins Center sells out for the game, and the Spiders end the season 22-14.

-5 An 81-year-old resident of Brighton Gardens dies from injuries suffered in the assisted-living center. A Brighton official tells the Times-Dispatch that “policies and procedures were violated.” An employee is fired. Police investigate.

+1 Richmond learns it isn’t the only city that can bungle a basketball game with a slippery floor. Players fall at an NIT game at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky., thanks to condensation from the ice rink below, set up for the Target Stars on Ice show. Misery loves company.
