The Richmond Symphony at CenterStage

Saturday, Jan. 30.

Probably the most difficult thing for a professional vocalist is to take a song he or she didn't write, assert ownership of it, and make it synonymous with the singer's performance and God-given talent. The Beatles and Bob Dylan may be icons of popular music, but they also were songwriters, delivering material that started and ended with them. Frank Sinatra achieved the same level of cultural status by singing standards. A man so cool he could associate with presidents and mobsters, Ol' Blue Eyes was a constant hit maker who was able to maintain substantial appeal against ever-changing musical trends, delivering such recognizable pieces as “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “Luck Be a Lady,” “My Way” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” Honoring the work of one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, the Richmond Symphony presents an evening of “Simply Sinatra” at the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage at 8 p.m., featuring acclaimed vocalist Steve Lippia. $17-$72
