The downtown concert venue the National is playing host to the Blexit Conference Richmond: Statues vs. Governors on Sunday, March 3, from 3 to 6 p.m. The featured speaker will be Breitbart News’ entertainment editor Jerome Hudson.
The conference was launched by black conservative activist Candace Owens, the director of communications at the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, in hopes of “freeing black voters from the grip of the Democratic party.” Turning Point is known for its recruitment of conservatives on college campuses.
There were angry responses on social media questioning why the National would book such an event. The venue normally books touring bands but it has hosted rallies before, such as the Water for Life rally in 2017 (pictured), billed as “the biggest public rally ever against the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipelines.”
Blexit organizers told Style that “BLEXIT stands for black and Latino exit from leftist ideology. Candace Owens is the founder of the BLEXIT movement” and then referred us to a Breitbart article about the group and why it was coming to Richmond.
In the article, Owens told Breitbart News that she chose to bring Blexit to Richmond because the state has “become our nation’s capital for Democrat hypocrisy.”
“It’s a state which has spent the last two years tearing down statues that were deemed reminiscent of racial unrest [that] is being governed by a man who thinks black face and Ku Klux Klansmen hoods are appropriate Halloween attire,” Owens said. “It’s a state which senators voted against the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh — absent any concrete evidence — remains passive on the sexual assault claims facing its Lieutenant Governor.”
Here is how the Richmond event is pitched via Blexit’s online Facebook event post in its “about this event” section:
