Looking to hear something out of the ordinary this weekend? I strongly suggest checking out Mickey Singh on Friday at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Presented by the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Pakistani Student Association, the Indian-born bhangra singer — dance music from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent — headlines the fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Citizens Foundation, which works to educate underprivileged children in Pakistan. Like the Punjabi music of old, Singh’s music is deliriously upbeat. His modern version incorporates American Top 40 into the mix with the robust melodic flavor of the Indian film music standing front and center, with Singh singing mostly in his native tongue. A whole lot of feverish fun, this once-in-a-blue-moon night of cultural transference shouldn’t be missed by anyone who values the pleasure of tones. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $15-$35. facebook.com/psaatvcu.
