Former Richmonder and musician Jim Thomson may no longer be booking the Tropicalia in Washington, but he’s still exporting music. You’ll get a chance to hear some Ethiopian sounds from the nation’s capital when he brings the Feedel Band to Balliceaux, featuring Moges Habte, a saxophonist in the legendary Walias Band with Hailu Mergia. “Feedel Band’s sound is more jazzy than some of the grittier aesthetic of the popular Ethiopiques recordings,” Thomson says. “But the exoticism, musicianship and pedigree are all that. All the musicians are top-notch and the piano player Araya Woldemichael is dazzling.” Thomson has started a production company called Multiflora and is working on a new Electric Cowbell release for Record Store Day — “Ancient Sufi Invocations and Forgotten Songs from Aleppo” — recorded in one of the world’s oldest cities. “I’m also playing bongos whenever I can,” he says.
