The Chesterfield Berry Farm and Market has filed for bankruptcy, the Times-Dispatch reports. “Chapter 12 is a relatively new addition to bankruptcy laws that allows family farmers to restructure their finances,” writes Gregory J. Gilligan.
This means that the strawberries are still growing, the pumpkins will be ready in the fall and the haunted corn maze will confound visitors in October.
The pick-your-own farm has had a few bad years, apparently, and although the business will be reorganized, it’s not shutting down. “They certainly plan to continue operating and will begin operations as they usually do in May,” Kevin A. Lake, a lawyer with McDonald, Sutton & Duval, who represents the farm, is quoted as saying.
Instead of operating all-year-round, the plan is to transition to a seasonal, April-December business. And its market in Market Square shopping center in Brandermill, which closed at the end of October, will move to the farm off U.S. 360 and reopen in the spring as well.
