With Santa back at the North Pole, seasonal celebrations continue with the Capital City Kwanzaa Festival. The weeklong celebration, sponsored by the Elegba Folklore Society, kicks off Saturday, Dec. 27, at the Altria Theater. The festival features Pan-African scholar and activist professor James Small as keynote speaker, along with food, performances, workshops, children’s activities and an African market. The year-end holiday was started in 1965 to honor black heritage, with internationally acclaimed Richmond musician Plunky Branch as a driving force in establishing observances in this area code. He celebrates his 40th year of music-making by performing with his long-time group Oneness, along with Grammy-nominated Malian musician Cheick Hamala Diabate, reggae group Wildfire and jazz ensemble G7. The festivities run 1-9 p.m. Tickets range to $7. efsinc.org.
