I’ve always thought of basketball as ballet. Rhythmic and fluid, the game is predicated on the same geometrical grace, body control and use of space that Russian choreographer Leonid Yakobson had in mind when he cast Mikhail Baryshnikov in his 1969 ballet, “Vestris.” From March 4-10, a showcase of hardwood ballet takes place at the Richmond Coliseum during the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship. The tournament features daily matchups between 14 teams from seven states and Washington. Coached by Beth O’Boyle, hometown favorites the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams will be competing so you can root on Isis Thorpe, Adaeze Alaeze, Ashley Pegram and the rest of team as they try to win the title.
