While a number of contemporary musical artists claim to hold a torch for creative experimentalism, few have been so withdrawn by traditional pop music as to wholly invent their own instrument. Classically trained on the double bass, Mike Silverman plays what he refers to as “the magic pipe.” An instrument of his own design and assemblage, resembling some crude looking offspring of a harp, a bass and steel plumbing, the 7-foot tall junkyard-inspired construction is the electronic source of his bizarre stage art. Focusing samples and plucked tones with device's select trigger points, strings and electronic kick drum made from a modified cowboy boot, That 1 Guy's absurdist grooves come to the National with the New Deal on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m.,
