The How: Knife. Shotgun. 9 mm. Hands.
The Why: Drugs. Argument. Gun sale gone bad.
The When: At least one a month, with five each in August, November and December.
But at the heart of what detectives endeavor to uncover, amid the weapons, motives, times and places, is who. Who did it, and who was left behind.
In Richmond, there were 39 homicide victims in 2015. Police say the oldest was Wilton Kimbrough, a 60-year-old killed with a knife in the 1500 block of North 19th Street. The youngest was 1, Lakayla Robinson, a baby girl who died from being shaken in the 900 block of State Street.
Of the victims, 35 were black, three were white, one was Hispanic. There were 33 men and six women. And 15 of them, or 38 percent, were black men who died before seeing their 30th birthdays. Here are their names.
