Style & Substance: Road-Trip Escape: New Williamsburg Spa

While the husband and children are chatting with a blacksmith and learning how to make candles, moms can now escape to a high-end spa at Colonial Williamsburg.

But don’t expect to forget where you are. Like most things in Williamsburg, it pays homage to the past. The spa, which is housed in the former DeWitt Wallace Museum, specializes in treatments and ingredients from over the centuries.

A hot-stone massage with an herbal linen wrap incorporates elements of a Powhatan Indian sweat lodge, while historic herb combinations are used in the aromatic bath and as massage oils. Aside from a wide selection of massages, wraps, steams, scrubs, baths and facials — all of which can be done side-by-side if you can get the candle-maker to watch the kids — the spa has a fitness center.

Try the 50-minute guided walk through the adjacent Audubon sanctuaries and historic areas. Services at The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg run $18 to $565. (800) 688-6479.
