Stuff to do: City of Caterpillar, Dachtoberfest, Grandmaster Flash, Viva RVA Hispanic Music Fest, plus Yo Yo Ma and the Richmond Symphony

City of Caterpillar with Loud Night and Dorthia Cotrell at Richmond Music Hall on Friday, Sept. 30

It’s the return of local favorites, City of Caterpillar, a screamo/post-hardcore band that broke up in 2003 but has played various reunion shows since then –and more importantly, are releasing their first album in 20 years, “Mystic Sisters” (Relapse Records) the day of this show. It should be a barnburner of a night before the band goes on a headlining national tour. According to The Washington Post: “The resurgent Virginia quartet — whose sound falls somewhere between hardcore and post-rock, and whose reputation has grown into something between ‘cult’ and ‘legendary’ — has always been able to make time fly. Their most meticulous songs fold it like origami. Their most chaotic moments crumple it into a ball.”

Also on this stacked bill, blistering local rippers, Loud Night, who have the same kind of power “E” had, and evoke memories of “River’s Edge” road music, plus the great singer Dorthia Cotrell of Windhand fame. For fans of heavy and authentically hard Richmond bangers, this should be a very relaxing way to start your weekend. Doors at 7 p.m. show at 8 p.m. Go to etix to learn if there any tickets left.
