“The Meeting” at Art Works

Tony Cosby spends a lot of his time becoming Martin Luther King Jr. for staged productions and re-enactments of his speeches, and he takes the stage one more time with Rodney Choice for “The Meeting,” a fictional encounter between King and Malcolm X, Sunday, June 18, at 3 p.m. $20. 329-1517.

Juneteenth With The Last Poets

Speaking of Malcolm X: Back in 1968, seven Harlem poets came together on his birthday and formed The Last Poets, a politically conscious group that combined African drums and song with the rhetoric of revolution. Years later, we have hip-hop. The Elegba Folklore Society kicks off its Juneteenth Freedom Celebration weekend with a performance by the “godfathers of rap” at the Hyperlink Café Friday, June 16, at 8 p.m. $10. SlamRichmond’s Championship Invitational

Please stow all metaphors in the overhead compartments and bring your rhyme to its full and upright position: After six qualifying poetry slams at ComedySportz, the time has come to choose the five poets to represent Richmond at the National Poetry Slam in Austin in a few months. So Monday, June 19, at 7:30 p.m., the 12 qualifying poets throw out their best collection of spoken word, wait for their score and hope for a seat on that flight to Texas. $7-$10. 263-7637.

Glenn Beck at the Landmark Theater

What is it about people who get everybody riled up? Whether you agree or disagree, you’re waiting for the moment when somebody snaps and goes after the speaker with a tire iron. Glenn Beck’s national radio show, heard locally on WRVA 1140-AM, has that effect on a lot of people, but many tune in to be annoyed. People are weird that way. Beck comes to Richmond for his “Mid-Life Crisis Tour” to rant about the things 42-year-old conservative men find amusing Wednesday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. $25-$35. Call 262-8100 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
