Snarky Puppy at Alice Jepson Theatre

Saturday, Feb. 1. 7:30 p.m.

There’s no way to pigeonhole Snarky Puppy. Led by bassist Michael League, the group can be a Zappa funk freak-out, Afro-Cuban balladeers or a hard rockin’ R&B band. But no matter what its members play, they always sound like themselves. No doubt that these guys honed their chops playing along to Weather Report records. Unlike most scholarly pursuits, the six-piece collection of virtuosos from Dallas and New York isn’t too serious about its music. Primus and Mr. Bungle are obvious comparisons, but Snarky Puppy’s fusion is more organic in nature. They aren’t tourists visiting genres, they are true believers with the ability to make any music they play their own. Snarky Puppy brings its musical carousel to University of Richmond’s Alice Jepson Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 1. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9-$18. modlin.richmond.edu.
