Potato Pizza
When the neighborhood is saturated with pizza options, it pays to do things differently. So the guys at Belmont Pizzeria, which opened last week, are introducing potato pizza — sliced spuds quick-fried and layered over garlic-herb butter, olive oil and mozzarella. They say it's flying out of their double-stack pizza ovens.
First-time owners Stephen Lackey, Victor Guevara and Sal Nuara say they've done their research in setting up the take-away business at 602 N. Belmont Ave. in the former Vapors salon. They've priced slices and pies at a bit under average ($5.50 for a personal cheese pizza, $2.50 per slice), and use an old Sicilian recipe with scratch-made dough and fresh ingredients.
They also sell pasta, salads, appetizers and desserts, and a range of from-the-oven standards such as stromboli, calzone and hot subs; they deliver the goods with a $12 minimum order. Open daily. 888-9861.
Zombies need food too: The folks at Sprout Market & CafAc are calling all costumed ghouls to a brunch feeding Oct. 30 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. They also have a farmers' dinner featuring Manakintowne Specialty Growers on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m., for $35 per person; a separate dessert and wine option is $15. Harvest wine dinner: Chef Andrea Huntjens of CafAc 2100 and Sophisticated Soirees announces a four-course dinner paired with Virginia wines, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Oysters, rockfish and venison are on the menu, priced at $75.95 per person, tax and gratuity extra. Burger mania: Over at Dot's Back Inn, chef-owner Jimmy Tsamouras says customers crave burgers more than anything else these days, so he's giving them 15 new options with 27 different ingredients. The Ultimate has cheddar, grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon and jalapenos, clocking in at $8.75. Other new dishes include a vegetarian falafel gyro, dinner salads and 10 sandwiches, and an expanded kids' menu. 4030 MacArthur Ave. 266-3167. dotsback.com.
Monday night football: In addition to the usual sports bars, a Midlothian restaurant is adding football to its lineup. Great Seasons has a $5 deal for burger and a beer on Monday nights; it's also offering Thanksgiving dinner to go, Sunday brunch, happy hours Monday through Saturday, and weekday lunches in the Shoppes at Bellgrade, 11400 W.
