Acclaimed storyteller and artist for social change, Awele Makeba, brings her story of history to Richmond April 9 for a theater performance of the Montgomery bus boycott, “I’m Not Getting On, Until Jim Crow Gets Off.” She takes the stage solo, using a talking timeline with a mélange of historical voices and audience interaction to re-examine the civil rights movement. Her performance has been an annual staple in Richmond and Petersburg secondary schools since 2003, and one of her aims is to stop reality TV’s takeover and give youth a rendition of performance art with some educational value. Her worldwide theater stints, workshops and lectures have reached area schools, and for the first time, she opens at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School at 7 p.m. Free. 340-5281.
