Rainmaker Festival
‘Tis the season, it seems, for musicians to lend their talents to the common good. On July 9, Susan Greenbaum, the Gary Gerloff Band, Page Wilson and Reckless Abandon, Big Boss Combo, Tinker’s Dam, Blue Line Highway, Cook County Bluegrass, Robin Carnes and The Squalor Hollow Boyz, The Slack Family Bluegrass Band and Soy Hero get their acoustic acts together at Legend Brewery for a charity festival to support Art180, Camp Easter Seals, the Noonan Syndrome Support Group, Safe Harbor and others, starting at 1 p.m. Tickets are $7-$10. Music Documentary at Hyperlink Café
The Richmond Jazz Society presents a screening of J. Plunky Branch’s film “Under the Radar: A Survey of Afro-Cuban Music,” July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Hyperlink Café. Little things like communism and economic blockades have sealed the Cuban culture away since the late ’50s, but intrepid musical explorers like Plunky have broken through the Cigar Curtain to document the island’s culture and sound. The Kirsten Thien Band at Bogart’s
There’s the blues: Thien’s voice sweetly calls u long highways and those emblems of loneliness. Then there’s rock: Her sound kicks off and rolls down that highway, led by a voice that seems very much in control. There’s also soul, which settles right in with the other two, all of it bouncing smoothly along a road trod by other blues muses like Bonnie Raitt. Thien and her band play Bogart’s July 8 at 9 p.m. $7. 353-9280.
