Mosquitos at Canal Club
May rains bring the pesky blood-suckers, but pleasant climates attract cute Brazilian singers in three-piece bossa-nova pop outfits. The Mosquitos bring danceable electronic rhythms together with the naturally rhythmic Portuguese language to heat the blood, if not drain it. They play May 6 at 8:30 p.m. $7. 643-2582.
A Roots Revival
Big tents under big trees, holy rollers, bonnets: That’s a revival in the South. Richmond Roots Revival spares the hats but brings on the big sounds. Whether it’s Summerhaven’s multicultural folk rock or the all-in-one singer-songwriter skills of Dean Fields and Chris Adams, Bogart’s Back Room will shake like a big tent, May 6 at 9 p.m. $7. 353-9280.
And, of course, Mother…
Listen, you forget Mother’s Day and the rest of your spring is going to look pretty bleak. Here are a few options to make her happy May 8: The Tommy Witten Trio with Laura Ann Boyd play a Mother’s Day Brunch at Lewis Ginter, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (262-9887); the Richmond Concert Band performs at Agecroft Hall at 6:30 p.m. (737-3767); and for the laid-back mom, the Richmond Symphony performs “Kicked Back Classics” at the Science Museum of Virginia at 5 p.m. (788-1212). Treat her right and maybe you can borrow some money for those music series.
