Nothing mixes with the sweet odor of fried seafood and diesel fuel like some good old honky-tonk. Yes, friends, the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club celebrates the silver anniversary of its annual oyster bake and tractor pull with Daddy-Oh and western swingers the Honky Tonk Experience March 26. Twenty-five years of souped-up lawn mowers, deep-fried hush puppies and lots and lots of twang pack into the Hanover Ruritan Park from noon to 5 p.m. There are a lot of cultural events in this town, but few that are this enriching. Shamrock the Block 2005
The 17th Street Farmers’ Market gets the last word on our greenest holiday with Shamrock the Block 2005, March 26, noon-6 p.m., sponsored by Y101 and featuring Conshafter and Rocket Queen, the Guns N’ Roses cover band that breaks down race barriers with lead singer Blaxl Rose. Everybody loves a good cover band, and one that can outperform the band they’re covering earns points for both talent and kitsch. A little rock and a little silliness go a long way to welcoming the spring. The show is free. 330-5700.
Mitch Hedberg at the Funny Bone
Though not a musical act, though not even a musical comedian, Mitch Hedberg needs to be ranked with the best shows of the week because his comedic voice comes at you with its own rhythm, its own stoner melodies. Try to leave his show and not talk like him. His humor is random — his observations on food from vending machines is well worth the time it takes to speak normally again — and you can’t help but admire a comedian who, at points, just reads from his battered notebook and critiques his own material on the fly. He plays the Funny Bone March 23-26. Tickets are $18-$22. 521-8900.
