Set List

Where to go. What to hear.

Particle at the Canal Club

With the release of “Launchpad” last year, the L.A. electronica quartet has proven that when funk and trance are combined with the right beat, you have a sound that even robots can dance to. Luckily, so can people. Beat the Donkey opens March 4 at 8:30 p.m. $15. 643-2582.

Michael Lowenstern at the Modlin Center

A formidable clarinetist with a technical side, Lowenstern plays solo, with ensembles and with machines. He brings the traditional together with technology to create music built on science and talent. The free show is March 2 at 7:30 p.m. 289-8980.

Cathy Ann MacPhee at First Unitarian Universalist Church

Scottish Gaelic singer MacPhee carries the culture of a Scottish island in her voice. Her upbringing on the Celtic isle of Barra introduced her to the community of storytelling, poetry and music. With the outside world reshaping that community, MacPhee’s songs have become a museum of sound, preserving and sharing a piece of the world that might not otherwise be heard. She performs with Celtic producer and musician Zan McLeod March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10-$12. 355-0777.

Avail at Alley Katz

They’ve been playing twangy punk with feeling for long enough to be veterans. They’re old enough to be a wise band without being commercialized. You’ll see and hear a lot at the show on March 5. You’ll bask in the pride of knowing that these guys are Richmonders. And if you’re lucky, you may just see a dancing Beau Beau onstage. Lucero and the well-named Pink Razors open, starting at 6 p.m. $7. 643-2816.
