Where to go. What to hear.

A Notebook Battle at Nanci Raygun

Richmatic, the Thursday-night hip-hop showcase at the Nanci Raygun, has something new to offer hopeful DJs and eager MCs: the chance to do some graffiti. Richmatic is host to a Notebook Battle Feb. 24, providing markers and lots of paper for those who want to try their hand at tagging the Richmatic logo on paper. There are prizes for the top three, chosen by the crowd. DJs will be spinning throughout the night to get people thinking graphically. The show starts at 11 p.m. $3. 353-4263.

Oteil and the Peacemakers at Fusion

Occasional Allman Brothers bassist Oteil Burbridge and his band are going to pack a lot of music into the club in Fusion’s basement Feb. 23. Burbridge has run with Colonel Bruce Hampton, Frogwings and Gov’t Mule, and while it was natural that some of the Southern rock would seep into the Peacemakers’ sound, Burbridge’s roots lie in jazz and blues. So the show at Fusion promises funk with polish, a little jam, a little groove and maybe an Allman Brothers song or two, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12-$15. 249-2338.

Donna the Buffalo at the Canal Club

Donna the Buffalo is coming to Richmond Feb. 26, bringing more than a little summer music festival. That’s a good thing for fans who’ve been keeping warm this winter in their hemp, their leather jackets and whatever bluegrass fans wear. The point is, many different styles of music come together in Donna’s sound (though there is no Donna, by the way), and there’s more than a hint of the jam band in it, enough to stir up some summer sounds at the Canal Club, starting at 9 p.m. $15.
