Richmond Soulfest 2007Soul, a term that rested for about 15 years after being exhausted in the ’70s, has returned to the pop-culture lexicon with a vengeance. In Richmond alone, there are three restaurants, a radio station, a nightclub, a magazine and an R&B band all using this four-letter word to convince you of their validity and conviction. Now there’s a benefit concert using the S-word at The Camel Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. The lineup includes seven acts from Richmond, Norfolk and Washington, D.C., bringing sounds of jazz, blues, rock, funk and … soul. Featured bands include Double Standard Crew, Danie Ocean, The Soul Students, Elements of Soul, The Violet Side, Oddisee, Jon Bibbs and True Sounds. Bill Burr at the Funny BoneBill Burr is probably best known as the red-haired white guy from “The Chappelle Show.” He was one of the suits who made the mistake of ordering a “Sam Jackson” beer and portrayed a frank commentator in the infamous racial draft sketch. But Burr is more than just a straight man; he’s had his own HBO special and has appeared on late-night talk shows and on “Showtime at the Apollo.” Burr is what’s known as a working comedian, performing more than 300 shows a year. The red-haired guy punches in at the Funny Bone, Aug 30, at 7:30 p.m. His stint at the club continues through Sept. 2. $17. 521-8900.
Out of Town Pick: Verizon Wireless American Music Festival in Virginia Beach There’s something about seeing a band past its prime that reminds you of who you once were and how much you’ve changed. If you’re looking to swim in that ocean of nostalgia, head to Virginia Beach. This festival’s touted as “the largest outdoor music concert on the East Coast,” and its lineup looks like a convention of yesteryear’s Top 40. INXS, KC & the Sunshine Band, Dokken, Georgia Satellites and the Marshall Tucker Band will be joined by other groups who haven’t seen their name in print since Reaganomics. The concert spans three days (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) and six stages in downtown Virginia Beach. Angie Stone, one of the few acts on the bill that will be releasing new material this year, closes the show Sept. 1 on the 24th Street stage.
