Breaking Laces and oh my god at Rocks
Breaking Laces, the Brooklyn indie-rock three-piece, seems to be trying to both break your heart and sleep with you, which may be indie rock’s truest goal. Carried along on strong songwriting and energetic, if delicate, arrangements, there’s something straightforward and unpretentious about the sound — which is just how they get you. Chicago’s oh my god fools you at first with really light vocals before running you into a sonic wall made of bass and some absolutely incredible organ work, filling in for practically every instrument around and reinventing the sound in every verse. Noise Festival at Artspace
The 4th Annual 804noise Southeastern Experimental & Noise Festival is notoriously lacking in tunes you can hum. But for those people thinking they’d like to hear a sound that’s never been made before or see what the improvisational elements of jazz sound like applied to metal or crappy analog machines, the 804noise collective has put together two days of avant-garde talents. Saturday, Oct. 14, starts with entities like Magicicada, which reimagines folk and Eastern music with found objects. Day one runs 5-11 p.m. and is free. The second day, Sunday, Oct. 15, is the main event, adding multimedia displays to the sonic landscapes that bring in lights and feedback, all moving toward an organic and new, if jarring, aesthetic experience. Percy Sledge at Alley Katz
Speaking of trying to sleep with someone, if you or someone you love has a similar intention and a desire for beer, Alley Katz hosts R&B legend Percy Sledge, he who explained what really happens “When a Man Loves a Woman.” The crooner became one of the voices of Southern soul in the late ’60s, and as proof of his lasting power, that ballad has probably inspired babies and certainly inspired the sales of Levi’s and other things with its popularity in commercials.
