Rainmaker Festival at Legend Brewery
It’s good to know that local roots, blues and rock acts have such a dedication to community service (not in the legal troubles way, though). Anyway, here’s the Rainmaker Festival, bringing together bands like NRG Krysys, Page Wilson with Reckless Abandon, The Squalor Hollow Boyz, Tinker’s Dam and others to raise money for The Harvey Family Memorial Endowment, Positive Vibe Café and a few other charities Sunday, Sept. 10, 1-10 p.m. If they can do their part, can’t you drink beer for a good cause? $10. 232-3446.
Musicircus at Chop Suey Books
Inspired by late experimental composer John Cage, Musicircus, wrangled together by Brian Jones, gets something like 20 musicians up and rolling along to see, just to see, what might happen. Strange? Donald Harrison at Canal Club
Alto-sax globe-trotter Harrison got his start studying under the Marsalis family patriarch Ellis and has taken his thing on the road, from New Orleans to jazz stages the world over. The Richmond Jazz Society brings that well-traveled woodwind to the Canal Club Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. $10-$15. 643-1972.
VCR, Japanther and Ultra Dolphins at Gallery5
Well and everybody knows the keyboard anthill that is VCR, which is back from some tour or other. Japanther and Ultra Dolphins sound like critters from the Nature Show of the Future (where Brooklyn’s Japanther is an animal that looks a lot like two guys playing noisy punk with drums and distortion, and Richmond’s Ultra Dolphins prowl around the territory of a fast, warped rock sound).
