Where to go. What to hear.

John Jorgenson at Orchard House School

Inspired by the feathery guitar work of the legendary Django Reinhardt, Jorgenson has channeled the spirited “gypsy jazz” sound and made it his own, playing with Elton John, Willie Nelson and Luciano Pavarotti. Now with his own quintet, that ornate swing style will come through at a benefit concert for the Orchard House School, 500 N. Allen Ave., Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. $15-$20. 320-7067.

Stanley Jordan at the Canal Club

Speaking of talented guitarists, Jordan stakes his claim in a whole different side of jazz: the contemporary. Beyond that, it’s hard to categorize the music exactly, except to say his style of tapping the strings generates the sound of multiple guitarists. Jordan’s interest in musical therapy as a means to improve physical and mental health makes his output all the more emotional. Not to mention holistic. He plays the Canal Club Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. $15-$20. 643-2582.

The Hong Kong at VCU

VCU’s UnCommon Live concert brings three bands to the Richmond Salon in the Student Commons, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. Tenement Halls conjures The Kinks. Vancouver’s Destroyer arrives following a tour with The New Pornographers. And headliner The Hong Kong (hailing from New York rather than the Far East) is led into indie rock battle behind Catherine Culpepper’s fluttery vocals. Free.
