Robert Jospé and Inner Rhythm at Randolph-Macon College
Oh, they’ll call it jazz, because there’s a lot of it around. But Charlottesville’s resident drummer and composer, Jospé, and his ensemble, Inner Rhythm, dig deep, or at least more southerly, bringing in elements from salsa to African rhythms. Jospé’s banged a drum with the likes of Willie Nelson and Pat Metheny, so blending styles has carried him pretty far. The group plays Blackwell Auditorium Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Free. 752-3712.
Jack Williams at Shady Grove Coffeehouse
Jack Williams: Look at him. There’s a guy who can change a flat. And if the recognition the South Carolinian has garnered for his contemporary folk in 40 years on the road and off the mainstream radar is any indication, he can both sing and song-write. Dynamite Club at Nanci Raygun
Have you ever seen jazz in underwear? Where the band is in underwear, that is, not you. Frontman Kentaro Saito leads you thus into temptation with his band’s blend of avant jazz, punk, and a general background noise caused by the sheer joy felt by grown-up musicians playing music in their knickers. High on Fire at Alley Katz
For as loud and heavy as they play, the threesome behind High on Fire have been kind of low-key, always coming through Richmond as openers or playing amid the chaos of the Sounds of the Underground Tour with GWAR, Clutch and others. But with the success of “Blessed Black Wings,” their thick riffs may be forcing their way to the front of the metal chow line.
