Seeing Through the Fence,” screening at the VCU Library, is a documentary with bite.

While director Robert Kenner's documentary “Food, Inc.” has received the most press of late for its alarming, even heartbreaking, exposition of the United States' ill-managed food industry, it certainly isn't cinema's last word on how bad meals make for bad health. Adding to the discussion of a truly balanced diet is Eleni Vlachos and her do-it-yourself picture, “Seeing Through the Fence.” Using a handheld digital recorder, Vlachos traveled the country and abroad interviewing random people, taking a humor-infused, omnivore-friendly look at the world of vegans, vegetarians and the ethics of modern food production. Touring across various universities and colleges, Vlachos is scheduled to present a special screening and Q&A session at Virginia Commonwealth University. Sept. 2, at 7 p.m., 701 W. Grace St., room 2310. — Mike Hilleary
