School Aims to Create Role Models

Since then, volunteers have come from all walks of life and professions, she says. This year they have included Judge Roger L. Gregory, the first African-American judge for the Richmond-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Nearly all of the school’s approximately 315 students are black, and Wharton-Carey says the students look forward to seeing the volunteers. “They love it,” she says. “I think it’s just because they come out, and it’s not for any academic purpose — it’s just to get to know them.” The school has yet to find 100 black males to volunteer, but it will extend the program to March in an effort to reach the goal.

What about women readers? “Anytime someone wants to come in and provide some positive energy,” Wharton-Carey says, “we’d love to have that.” To volunteer, call the school at 780-4417. — Jason Roop
