I think a major injection of common sense is needed throughout the Richmond metro area. It only stands to reason that to properly maintain the toll roads warrants an increase in the tolls (“Free Riders,” Back Page, April 9).

I am sure that the cost of maintaining those roads has risen dramatically over the time that they have been in place. Without the increase, how would the RMA be able to have the necessary funds to maintain the roads? As was stated by Roy West in his opinion, the idea of stripping the RMA of its Richmond majority members is ludicrous.

Rather than criticism of the RMA, VDOT should be receiving criticism for the deplorable condition of the roadways for which they are responsible. For an example: The I-95 North to I-64 West connection is bad enough, but actually driving on I-64 West is like driving over a washboard. The roadway is a patchwork of fill-ins, high spots and low spots. I realize that this is a heavily traveled roadway, but major improvements are long overdue. Other parts of that particular interstate have been closed overnight or over weekends to complete the “fly-over” from I-295. Congestion in the Short Pump area of Broad Street and Pouncey Tract Road is bad enough without the extra construction work being done. I have driven in that area many times, especially during rush hour. It can take anywhere from 20 or 30 minutes or more to get from Pouncey Tract Road to Route 288 South. I think it is high time that VDOT needs to be called to account for irresponsibility.
