While its population count keeps it from ranking as one of the most dangerous cities in the country, Irvington, N.J., is still considered by statisticians a rough place to grow up. As someone who was actually able to come out with a strong and optimistic perspective, funk and soul artist Robert Randolph is an exception to the rule. Known for his sacred-steel pedal guitar playing, Randolph and his Family Band find a way to bring church to the masses through lively gospel-infused concerts that encourage constant dancing. Catch them at the National on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. $20-$23. 612-1900. — Alexander Chang
