Where Were Hidden Artists?

I was upset to see that there were no "behind the scenes" artists listed in "The Arts 25" (Cover Story, Sept. 5) -- for example, stage managers, production managers, technicians, dressers and designers or any up-and-coming theater companies.

I could name five-plus people/groups that belong on this list that were not on there. I have a degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in stage management/theater technology and have worked for many years in the theater as a professional stage manager and theater technician. I also manage www.RichmondVATheater.com.

Mercedes Schaum is a wonderful set designer who has designed for Theatre IV, Barksdale Theatre, SPARC and numerous other theaters around, and without her, the stage would be bare, the show would not be the same. Lynne Hartman is a brilliant lighting designer and has designed for TheatreVirginia before they went dark, and currently designs for a numerous amount of theaters in and out of Virginia.

These people are behind the scenes but are changing the way the theater and arts live and breathe. They are always inventive and going the one step above the standard.

Welcome to public housing without the public part. It’s time to demand that RRHA provides more of a commitment to residents.
