More donuts and beer, but less Chow. Plus, a mini events roundup.

Soon to close: A Virginia Commonwealth University stalwart, Chow House, announced it would close June 25. “We are turning over this amazing location to our friends serving up some awesome tropical/Asian fusion come August,” it announced on its Facebook page.

Opening: Sugar Shack finally opened its South Side location at 1931 Huguenot Road to large crowds. This makes the third in owner Ian Kelley’s portfolio of doughnut shops. A Sugar Shack location on East Main Street closed at the end of January. … A Mediterranean deli called Mesopotamia Deli at the Shops at Wellesley opened, as reported by RVA News: “[It] offers a deli, a small grocery, and a buffet with kebabs, shawarma and salads, all made fresh daily.”

And more beer: The Veil Brewing Co. plans to open on Roseneath Road in Scott’s Addition. Two weeks ago, Castleburg Brewery & Taproom announced that it had secured a spot on Ownby Lane near Hardywood Park Craft Brewery.


It’s an oyster fest at Secco Wine Bar on Tuesday, June 23, at 6:30 p.m. Chef John Ledbetter, joined by Hampton’s Six chef Rich Chinnock, will prepare oysters five ways with wines chosen by Secco owner Julia Battaglini. Tickets are $65 and details can be found at seccowinebar.com/events.

On Thursday, June 25, from 4-8:30 p.m., Isley Brewing and the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg will showcase what the nonprofit does for the community, with the Righteous Outlaws Band providing a little live music. isleybrewingcompany.com.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery will celebrate the release of its Virginia Blackberry — a Belgian wheat beer packed with fruit — on Saturday, June 27, from 2-9 p.m., with music from the Hot Seats, Photosynthesizers, Grass Panther and Spooky Cool. hardywood.com.
