Weekly Food Notes: Awards, Expansions + More

Award Season: David Shannon, chef and owner of L’Opossum, has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation and is a semifinalist for its 2016’s best chef Mid-Atlantic award. And although Peter Chang was nominated for his restaurant in Short Pump last year, he’s a best chef Mid-Atlantic semifinalist for his Arlington restaurant this year. ... The always imaginatively themed Richmond restaurant awards, the Elbys, gave Dutch & Co. the award for best restaurant, Vagabond's Owen Lane for best chef and the Rogue Gentlemen's Will Longoria for rising star on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

On the Move: Gov. Terry McAuliffe awarded Blue Bee Cider a $50,000 grant from the Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund to help with its expansion and the renovation of the old stables property in Scott’s Addition, with the city of Richmond providing matching funds. The cidery is currently located in Manchester.

Expanding: The Answer Brewpub at 6008 W. Broad St. will expand next door to increase its brewing space in order to up the production of its beer, reports the Times-Dispatch. Openings: The always busy McAuliffe and his wife, Dorothy, attended the opening of Rapp Session, the latest offering from Rappahannock owners Ryan and Travis Croxton on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
