Warren Hixson and Hot Dolphin at the Well

Saturday, Oct. 26. 10 p.m.

My favorite Richmond band at the moment is Warren Hixson. Since I saw the quintet play for the first time a couple of weeks ago, its gritty, instantly memorable release, “Hawaiian Underwear,” has been daily listening in my house. With the group’s Gun Club-meets-Dick Dale-at-the-corner of the Sonics-and-Messer Chups sound, rockin’ atmospheric instrumentals such as “Highway Surf” and the album’s title track blend seamlessly with harder-edged tunes, “I Wanna Take You Home” and the off-kilter “Make It Plain.” What results is an impressive and thoroughly engaging album. People have told me for years how good the group was, but for whatever reason, I’m just now becoming aware. I guess I should listen to people more often. Warren Hixson plays WRIR-FM DJ Shannon Cleary’s 30th birthday party Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Well with Hot Dolphin. Doors open at 10 p.m. Free, with donations encouraged. thewellrva.com.
